Wordless Wednesday #98: “ My Ceiling Project”

self-assignment: ceilings

The self-assignment is one of the best ways to learn how to use your camera and also how to look at the world. I always advise new photographers to pick a subject, object or place they’re interested in and photograph it 24/7. I’ve written here before about my self-assignment to photograph barns but I also have a lesser project to photograph ceilings.

Why? People don’t usually look up! But when your inside any kind of building, the architect always has a surprise or store in the way that the ceiling is designed, so when I’m looking around and can’t find something of interest I look up. The above image was made with a Canon EOS Rebel T2i that I was testing for Shutterbug magazine. Lens was the camera’s kit lens: an EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS at 55mm with an exposure of 1/13 sec at f/5.6 and ISO 400 in Program mode.
